Welcome To The Kailua Kona Hawaii Real Estate Section
You also need to know what "makai" and "mauka" mean. People refer to those two terms when giving directions instead of east or west.
For example, if you ask some one what the makai side of the Queen "K" Highway is, they would say it means the "ocean side" of the road. Mauka means the "mountain side" These terms are used instead of east or west because it's just easier.
The big island use to be one of the best kept real estate deals in the country. Not anymore. The party's over.
When I moved here in 1996 you could buy a house for just over 100k. In 2005 it took over 500k to buy a home here. Now in the fall of 2007 prices are dropping significantly. "New Price" is seen sprinkled all over the Sunday classifieds real estate section of our local newspaper.
When the stock market tanked a few years ago, people started investing heavily in the real estate market here and it has driven the prices through the roof!
For those on a budget there still is some affordable land available down south about 50 miles from Kailua.
Then there's Kukio...
In case you're wondering, Kukio is an exclusive housing development for the super rich. Its located north of the airport just a few miles on the makai side of the highway.
If you don't have your own jet you probably don't have enough dough to even buy a lot there.
